Phuket, Similans - Liveaboard ~ Really Wicked Witch

Our land based Phuket trip will see us staying in Phuket, at the heart of Patong beach and taking three day dive trips aboard MV Santana. The boat is a fast, comfortable and safe boat. Allowing you to concentrate on enjoying the wonderful diving that Phuket has to offer. Accomodation will be at the Patong Peral Resort, just a short walk from the beach and the numerous restuarants and bars Patong beach is famous for.

The dive boat we will be using really is the business... Kitting up could not be easier thanks to her spacious dive deck and helpful crew. Entering and exiting the water is a piece of cake thanks to her low entry-platform and diver-friendly ladders.

Downstairs is a comfortable lounge, and upstairs is a covered dining area and cushioned sundeck for sun worshippers or those who just want to enjoy Phuket's unparalleled sunsets on the way home.

Patong Pearl Resortel enjoys a perfect location in the heart of Patong. It's just 150m from the beach, and in easy walking distance of Soi Bangla, the heart of Patong's lively nightlife. Yet it's far enough from the bars to be nice and quiet if you want and early night.

The 7 original "Living Place Bungalows" are still offered, along with standard and superior rooms added when the hotel was built in 2000. The rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with bathroom, hot/cold water, satellite TV, in house video, telephone, refrigerator, mini-bar, safety deposit box and private balcony.

In the private back garden you will find a swimming pool and sunbathing terrace along with with jacuzzi and kids' pool.

Some of the dive sites we will be visiting:-

  • Shark Point
Is a small rock, breaking the surface about 1 1/2 hours east of Phuket. It is now a Marine Sanctuary due to it's tremendous variety of marine life. Particular attractions are the colourful soft corals and giant sea fans decorating the limestone pinnacle, the great range of tropical fish and the famous leopard sharks found on the sandy bottom. Although a relatively small site, it can take a number of dives to experience the full range of gems to be found here.

  • King Cruiser Wreck
King Cruiser, which sank in May '97, has already become a fabulous dive site. Spanning a length of 80m and a width of 30m, her three decks provide excitement and adventure for all levels of diver. Totally covered with shells and soft corals, King Cruiser has become a huge artificial reef and the chosen home of a great variety of marine life, including lionfish, moray eels and the occasional turtle or nurse shark. From the beginner to the wreck dive specialist the King Cruiser satisfies everybody.

  • Racha Yai
Lying about 1.5 hours from Phuket, Racha Yai is the larger and nearest of the 2 Racha Islands. It is a beautiful tropical island with a lot of good hard coral reefs, colourful shallow water coral gardens and some classic staghorn coral reef shelving down to about 30 meters. Visibility is usually good around the island and there is the opportunity for some enjoyable drift diving. There are several good dive sites and some places are particularly suitable for the beginner and snorkeller, making this island a good destination for everyone.

  • Racha Noi
Although it is a smaller island than it's big sister, Racha Noi is worth the longer trip out. In addition to Racha Yai's attractions, it has clearer water and often deeper diving. Schools of pelagics such as giant barracuda are common and the chances to dive with manta rays are very high. Some sites are truly spectacular with giant underwater boulders and scenery like the Similans.

  • Phi Phi Island
3 hours due east of Phuket, the Phi Phi Islands are a famous tourist destination even for those unaware of the great diving available. This is where "The Beach" was filmed. The spectacular limestone cliffs above the water become sheer drop-off and craggy coral-encrusted landscape under the water, with a rich and colourful diversity of marine life. We normally make our Saturday Safari dives at the small islands of Bida Noi and Bida Nok where, amongst the walls of glassfish, the chance of seeing turtle, octopus, leopard sharks and seahorses is high. Whale shark are also occasional visitors
